Super Bowl Sunday and I have a love/hate relationship. The truth is, I don’t get football. I try so hard to care and I just don’t! Maybe if my mom brain could hold one more iota of information…just kidding, no. I still don’t care. If I could summon an incurable disease that conveniently descended upon me at approximately 4 pm on Super Bowl Sunday and dissipated around 9 pm, I probably would. The only, and I mean THE ONLY, time that the Super Bowl is semi-tolerable is during the commercials and half-time (I’m looking at you Lady Gaga- make it worth my while, girl!). Then there is the Super Bowl party. I can’t wait to go to someone’s house to chase my kids around and keep them from breaking things while my husband watches football. So fun. Like honestly, where do I sign up?
All whining aside, do you know the real reason why I attend Super Bowl parties? I’m in it for the food. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FOOD!! These stuffed mushrooms really are the BEST EVER! This is the one appetizer that my family requests for every family gathering. I get a “request for stuffed mushrooms” call before Thanksgiving, Christmas parties, Easter, family barbecues, pregnancy cravings…you catch my drift. I once failed to make them for Thanksgiving, and I was all but thrown out of the house. I am pretty sure the only reason I even get invited to family functions anymore is because of my mushrooms…and my dazzling good looks. haha. The real joke is how incredibly easy it is to make them!! They taste like you spent hours in the kitchen, but really it takes about 15 minutes prep time (+20 minutes cook time) and voila! You are the next Giada in the same amount of time as the “last 2 minutes” of the game. (Insert eye roll here)
I originally had this recipe as a kid when my Grandma Ovie would make them as an appetizer at Thanksgiving, and have since received several cookbooks with the same or similar recipe, including from one of my fav people ever (Thanks Lori!!). In my opinion, it is the perfect appetizer for any occasion, especially the Super Bowl! Nothing like a little sophisticated dish to liven up the (otherwise totally drab) party! Best Ever Stuffed Mushrooms
The perfect EASY and sophisticated appetizer!
- 1 pkg Jimmy Dean Sausage Regular (I have also used Maple and Hot! All good!)
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 2 pkgs fresh whole mushrooms
- 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 375 F.
Wash and pull stems from mushroom caps.
Brown sausage in skillet and drain fat.
Return skillet to medium heat and add cream cheese. Stir until cream cheese is melted.
Add Worcestershire sauce and pepper. (Optional: Add chopped mushroom stems to mixture. It will make the filling go further! Totally optional though, it is good both ways).
Stuff mushroom caps with mixture and place in 9x13 baking dish.
Bake for 20 minutes or until mushrooms are soft.
