Oh, I Can’t Tonight, I Have to Wash My Hair!

Hannah Goodrich HairI regularly get asked what hair products I use to make my hair so long and thick. I do admit, I have really great genes in the hair department. My mom has the thickest hair I have ever seen! But I have put my hair through the ringer throughout my life and I have to rely on amazing products to maintain the integrity of my hair.

Being a licensed cosmetologist, I have the opportunity to try and play with many different lines of hair care products as well as using products on different hair types. I worked in a salon for several years, until Veda was about 4 month’s old and started having seizures. At that point, I decided to say goodbye to the salon life (that I still miss!) and focus on being a mommy and my on-site hair and makeup business. Though it has been a few years since I have been actively working with client hair in the salon, it hasn’t stopped me from trying many different products and recommending products to family and friends.

When I was in cosmetology school… everyone knew it. I was one of “those girls” that had lots of different hair colors and cuts, including my fiery red shown below. I feel like I was able to do this without my hair falling out because of the amazing products that I was using. This includes the two products that I used and continue to use throughout the years- my beloved shampoo and conditioner.

While I think all hair products have their value, shampoo and conditioner may be one of the most important, in my humble opinion. I realize that it can be hard to splurge on something that you are literally washing down the drain, but it is the basis for all of the hair care products you use.

If you are using a cheap drugstore shampoo, it can be coating your hair with silicone or wax. This can make it feel luxurious and silky while damaging the inner layer of your hair and making it impossible for your other products to absorb into the hair. It can create more problems, damage, and breakage than you had originally. In school we were even able to use a well known drugstore shampoo to perm hair because it had so many chemicals in it! As a stylist, there is nothing more painful than doing a beautiful color and having it ruined at home by cheap shampoo! When you are using a cheap shampoo, you may not be washing shampoo money down the drain, but you are definitely washing all the money you spent on your beautiful color down the drain! There are, however, some drugstore shampoos that are better than others! Let me know in the comments below if you would like me to do some research and post about it!

I have used many different shampoos and conditioners but there is one that I ALWAYS come back to. Friends.. meet Pureology.

This has been my all time favorite duo since I was in high school. I love the smell, how concentrated it is, and that it protects my hair! This was also one of the shampoos and conditioners that I could use on most clients regardless of their hair type. While it is a little pricey, it is also super concentrated so you only need about a quarter size amount, depending on your hair length and thickness. Because of this, the bottles last much longer than any other shampoo. It makes my hair feel so moisturized, and the conditioner helps my scalp stay hydrated through the dry winter months.

You guys, I found an amazing deal for you!! If you buy any 1 liter Pureology Shampoo and Conditioner you can save $20 and they ship FREE!! I bought myself 1 liter bottles in September and they are still going strong! I have almost half left in each bottle, and I have really long thick hair!! I’m telling you, this stuff lasts forever!! Granted, I don’t get to wash my hair every day because…kids… but I still think that is pretty amazing! I always feel better about splurging with a little cost breakdown… If you were to buy the regular size shampoo it is $28. You would need 4 bottles to fill a 1 liter bottle of shampoo. So essentially you are getting $112 worth of product for $54.40. I think that is a steal!! (Note: I have also linked a few other professional shampoo brands that are on sale for only $14.99/liter at the end of the post!!)

The entire Pureology Shampoo and Conditioner line is on sale right now! If you are needing a different formula here is a quick explanation of each:

Pureology Hydrate (purple bottles)- this is the one I use! Great for all hair types and is very moisturizing!!

Pureology Strength Cure (blue bottles)- good for very damaged color treated hair

Pureology Smooth Perfection (hot pink bottles)- my mom swears by this one! Great for frizzy and unruly hair

Pureology Pure Volume (light pink bottles)- great for thin or flat hair if you are looking for volume

Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum (yellow bottles)- perfect for blondes with dry, brittle, or dull hair

These shampoos are all highly concentrated, contain zero sulfate, and are 100% vegan. They also contain an exclusive anti-fade complex that helps color treated hair maintain its color for as long as possible!

If you are interested in other high end professional brands of shampoo at a lower price point, I have linked a few others (Redken & Sebastian) below that I have used and liked over the years. BOTH are on sale right now for $14.99! You can’t beat $14.99 (Regularly $38!!!) for a liter of professional shampoo!! If you have a significant other in your life who is (cough.. cough..) going thinner on top, I also linked my favorite shampoo that helps combat thinning hair. ALL are currently on sale (online only), and ship free if you spend over $50!!

BRB, I’ve got to go wash my hair now………….

Hannnn! You explained it so well – washing our expensive hair color down the drain while saving on our cheap drugstore shamp/condish (oh hi, I use Gardnier Fructise haha)I used to use Pureology all the time in college and loved it. I’m thinking I need to get back on board again. I’m super platinum right now but have thin hair. Which Pureology would you recommend? Strength Cure, Pure Volume, or just plain Hydrate? XO-Chris

Thanks so much for reading Christy!!! From what you are telling me, I think maybe you would like the Perfect 4 Platinum! So many people love it! It is great for maintaining platinum and keeping brassiness at bay, while keeping your hair soft. It will also give your hair body! If you have a TON of breakage the Strength Cure could also be good, and you can never go wrong with good old Hydrate either! A lot of people switch off. You could do Perfect 4 Platinum and then when you run out try Strength Cure or Hydrate and then go back to Perfect 4 Platinum. It is actually really good for your hair to switch it up every now and again! I hope this makes sense and is helpful!!
